LOTRO: A splended game and nice version of Middle-earth

LOTRO: A splended game and nice version of Middle-earth

MrCere @ 5:19 pm EST

BOSTON, MA - Plenty has been said on TheOneRing about the new online Middle-earth game, "The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadow of Angmar". It is a business story, a pop-culture story, a gaming story and an adaptation story. Finally at the dawn of the game's hard release date, it is about time for a real review of the game. So here you go.

The Lord of the Rings Online - Buy Now

For those asleep at the wheel a brief recap is in order. Turbine Inc. has developed (a long story all by itself) a massive multiplayer online game that takes place in Tolkien's Middle-earth during the time of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Fellowship of the Ring." To those who haven't done this sort of thing (probably a lot of Tolkien readers) it means that a player, on a PC, enters an imagined Middle-earth, heavily influenced by Tolkien's text but also populated with conventions needed to pull of a successful game. The live experience involves completing quests for character advancement; perhaps with other players live at home on their own PC.

Everything points towards "LOTRO" being a strong horse out of the gate. In my visit to Turbine I felt a good bit of confidence behind everything the company was doing and saying. It even seems to be listening to customers, changing a policy that would have limited North American customers from interacting with European players.

Click for Larger ViewSo is the game fun? In a word, abso-freaking-lutely. It is fun to make up an avatar Dwarf, Elf, Hobbit or Man and explore more of a certain version of Tolkien's world. But "fun" isn't the final or only consideration here. Monopoly is fun and so is throwing snowballs at cars in the folly of youth, but is the fun worth the price? The price here is an incredible time sink and a monthly subscription for between $10 and $15 (Turbine rewards those who purchased early) and the game for a one-time $50. That formula has worked incredibly well for other online massive multiplayer games (MMOs) which consumes the free time of over 8 million monthly subscribers for the top-of-the-line game.

On a per-minute of fun basis, $15 a month is a bargain when compared to the cost of a two hour movie, a new CD, therapy or a massage. Like any of those options LOTRO is an escape from the stressful, sometimes mundane world. But enough with the rambles, let's get to the nitty-gritty.

VISUALS

Click for Larger VersionThe game looks amazing. Middle-earth has been alive in reader's imaginations for over 50 years and meeting expectations is a real challenge. Creating a game from scratch, with no preconceived notions or expectations, provides developers and programmers an open-ended mission to make the game look cool. But in LOTRO, the created world (perhaps the most celebrated in the history of fiction) must match - at least somewhat - the vision of millions who have already traveled through Middle-earth. So does the game pull it off?

One of J.R.R. Tolkien's great strengths was making Middle-earth feel real rather than fantastic to the reader. The online Middle-earth is best with its exteriors. Trees, clouds, grasses, forests, hills, dales and nature in general are the visual foundation of the game. Indoors the visuals falter a bit. Not because they don't still look "cool" but because the game feels more like a video game environment and less like an authentic experience. This isn't because of the skill used to render the images but more with the design of cultures inside the game. Still, this is a wonderful game to see and the complaint that the video game interiors look like a video game is indeed a minor quibble.

GAME PLAY

Click for Larger ViewYup, as previously stated, LOTRO is fun. Players must first create a character race and class which sets a locale and race and the foundation for the in-game tutorial that gets even new players off to a smooth start.

Middle-earth expands quickly as a player progresses levels with plenty of quests available from non-player characters sprinkled about the landscape. The idea is that characters will adventure, choosing quests of interest that provide in-game rewards such as improved armor or weapons or health. Meanwhile the player enjoys both the challenge of the quests and the satisfaction of leveling up while traveling through a computer version of Middle-earth.

In gamer slang I am a "noob" (new to the game or MMORPG in general) and I was occasionally frustrated with figuring out where to go to work on a quest. It was frustrating that a programmed character could want something, an item perhaps, but could only provide vague details on where to find it. Often other players provide tips but somehow I felt slightly stifled by the game. Once past the burden of navigation the quests are mostly well designed and quite fun. They can be tackled solo but often two players with different skill sets are better than one.

The richest moments of early game play happen when two players work together for common goals. Fighting a string of goblins alone can be a challenge for a starting player so when an archer and a brawler fall in together with a powerful long-range bow attack combined with mighty smash mouth blows with a sword, the goblins have short lives.

Ultimately, this shared experience is the key to enjoying the game. Killing cunning goblins or savage wolves solo, while mildly entertaining, isn't satisfying for long. Those are activities suited more for an Xbox 360 combat game while the whole point of the multiplayer online experience is to drink the depth the of world and interact with other players.

Turbine wisely, has mostly taken out the player versus player aspects of some MMORPGs. Some games are oriented to tap into players and teams of players' competitive instincts while LOTRO goes a different way.

There is an option for players who want to go toe-to-toe with other players. There is a section of the map where players can launch into monster roles and battle other players but borders prevent monster players from leading a band of Orcs into the Shire or a gaggle of Trolls from sacking Elrond's Rivendell.

There is also a duel feature which is competitive but not destructive.

COMMUNITY

Click for Larger VersionThe joy in, even the point of, a massive multiplayer game, is to experience the game with other players. LOTRO can be played solo, probably extensively, but it will virtually always be more enjoyable when its social aspects and Turbine has gone to great lengths to feature this as part of the core of the game play. For a game that gets high marks across the board, this is probably the most appealing aspect of the game.

For starters, www.LOTRO.com has a solid system of forums to help users in various aspects of the game.

But it is the in-game society that is the real draw. The smallest formal unit of group play is appropriately dubbed a "fellowship" (not to be confused with The Fellowship) and consists of six or more players. The larger kinship is more permanent and creates a more permanent pool for individuals to draw other players from to aid in adventuring. This is where the game goes from fun to on-line crack. When the game play becomes social the deep addiction kicks in, which can be both good and bad.

Players can and do visit landmark locations from the written "Fellowship of the Ring." If you want to hang at the Green Dragon, with your fellowship or kinship, feel free. And what is more, there are various ways to enjoy the company:

  • There is a system of "emotes" that lets players personalize moods and how they pass along information to other players. You can bow, wave, throw a tantrum, smack your head, look sleepy, limp beg and more that even the best trained dog never dreamed of. A list can be found at www.lotro.com but there are secret emotes waiting to be discovered.

  • The Iron Hills are alive with the sound of music! One fantastic innovation from Turbine is a character's ability to play music live in the game. Players have the ability to compose and play music using eight notes in an octave. In-game training and instruments are required but several videos at YouTube have already demonstrated that the sky is the limit. Turbine promises updates and additional features.

  • Voice Over IP or VOIP is usable for players in a kinship. This makes the game more about just being in the game and less about grinding through quests.

  • Middle-earth Google-earth type map features are present in the game.

  • Wiki pages are produced in-game by players who want to share the knowledge of Middle-earth and game play.

  • In-game blogs and web pages can be shared so that even if not present, kinships can preserve information permanently.

BEYOND LAUNCH - UPDATES

Click for Larger ViewThe launch of LOTRO was never intended to be the "final" release of the game. Turbine has a lot of tricks still up its sleeve but has delivered an extremely polished out-of-the-box game. Games like this often have a lot of challenges at launch. Turbine's own "Dungeons & Dragons" game has come a long way since the day it was first playable. The format with the constant patches, fixes and updates have massaged the game into something superior to its launch in every way.

LOTRO is already polished from its extensive development, big beta trials and its soft "try-out" launch three weeks ago. Today officially is the final product, but the game has been consumer ready for a long while with only tiny tweaks. The most heartening part of all of this is that the content of the game will evolve and improve. The emotes, for example, are a recent addition that enhanced the role play in just the last week. Kinships or individuals will likely be able to construct or buy dwellings in the future and the current playable map leaves a lot of Middle-earth yet to develop. In other words, even the finished game will never be finished.

The first grand update has already been announced. Last Friday the new content was introduced with, "Beginning in June, heroes can adventure to the Shores of Evendim, the first of many free updates to The Lord of the Rings Online."

While this is a review for the existing game, part of the reality of the existing game is that the developer (Turbine) excels at improving games. The prospect of the whole of Middle-earth as mapped by Christopher Tolkien for his father is real. In fact, Turbine is highly motivated to constantly improve and expand its content because its financial stake is tied up with retaining and growing its monthly subscription base.

SUMMARY

Click for Larger VersionLOTRO is fun. While there has been an admirable attempt to balance a fun game with reverence to Tolkien's Middle-earth the translation isn't exact. Those expecting to find the book on-line will be disappointed. Those looking for a fun game inspired by Middle-earth will enjoy exploring. The novels cover only a rail through gigantic maps while the game fleshes out the rest with genuine fun. The game shines as a social interactive environment and a series of carefully planned features make this the best part of the experience. Time spent in Middle-earth was satisfying and fun but it is thoughts of pushing the borders of the current map that really induces salivation. Turbine has released a splendid game that is an acceptable version of Middle-earth.

Runescape Gold

Runescape Gold – To Buy Cheap Runescape Gold or Use Free Runescape Gold Guides?
Well for many players of Runescape there are two main desires; one is to be very skilled; two is to be very rich. Now developing skills takes time but becoming wealthy in the game of Runescape doesn’t necessarily require you to be a high level. So how do the majority of players go about gaining Runescape Gold?

Well for most it is a method of playing the game and working out how to make money by developing skills that can earn good amounts of Runescape money in comparison to the time invested. For others they have developed a keen sense of the Runescape markets and managed to provide a service of buying and selling major raw and processed materials that are in high demand and supply. This means of making Runescape gold is referred to as merchanting and loads of information about how to go about earning gold in this way can be found in free Runescape gold guides that are on many Runescape fan sites and forums. Even with the availability of free Runescape gold guides there are also many Runescape gold guides for sale on the internet, though from my experience none are really worth the money if you have been playing for a couple of months and have reviewed a few of the free guides to making Runescape gold on Runescape fan sites and forums.

Buying Cheap Runescape Gold
The increasing alternative that many Runescape players appear to be opting for is buying cheap Runescape gold from online gold selling stores. These Runescape gold sellers sell millions of Runescape gold for real world money. Whilst this is in breach of Jagex’s terms of use it hasn’t stopped the sale of Runescape gold from such stores continuing. According to many this industry of MMO gold selling, including games like Runescape, is now a multi-million dollar industry with an estimated half a billion dollars worth of sales for the 2005/2007 financial year.

Whilst I don’t support players buying Runescape gold, it is obviously a growing option but the big question of whether it is worth it is dependant on your position within life and in Runescape. I mean if you have a full or part time job and are looking to really start enjoying Runescape without spending the first few weeks of your Runescape career scrapping together a few thousand Runescape gold pieces to buy yourself iron amour; then for as little as $10 you could get yourself a million Runescape gold pieces and be well onto your way to really leveling some of those skills and building your own ability to earn Runescape gold via playing the game.

Alternatively if you are already a fairly experience player with a 100k in your bank, you might be well advise to look into some of the free Runescape gold making guides available to turn that 100k into a few million. Either way I’d probably properly research the ways of making Runescape gold from free fan sites and guide sites before I headed off to buy a Runescape millions guide or one like it.

Can You Make Runescape Gold by Buying Runescape Gold?
Now again whilst buying Runescape Gold is against Jagex’s terms of service, the are a number of individuals that I know of personally that have benefited greatly from investments in purchasing Runescape Gold for real world money. How? Well not so long ago they purchased a few million Runescape gold from a gold seller and purchased all the rares that they could afford then sat on their rares for a few months and sold them 9 months later for a HUGE real world money profit. There are little industries anywhere in the world that you can almost be certain of 300 – 400% return on your investment every passing year, but Runescape rare items are such an industry, without fail every year Runescape rare items have increased in value and with that increase so has there real world value, and with each Runescape million gold pieces being worth $5 - $10 in the real world market there have been people that I have literally made $1000’s from selling their Runescape items when they quit the game. You can’t get those sorts of returns on the stock market. So as some have already proved spending a little money in an investment is a great way to make a little money.

Please note that we don’t recommend doing this and there are some inherent uncertainties involved not to mention is against Runescape’s rules but that hasn’t stopped other from trying and actually making large amounts of Runescape Gold and real world dollars doing it.
So what’s this article all about, well the title sort of covers it; it’s the truth about free and easy runescape money hacks for Runescape 2. It never ceases to amaze me what lengths players are willing to go to get free, easy Runescape money, aside of course from playing the game. Every day hundreds of people search for free Runescape money cheats which give them access to unlimited or infinite amounts of Runescape money. The sad reality is there are no Runescape money cheats out there that will change the amount of money you have in your Runescape account or give you access to unlimited free Runescape money. The only way to make Runescape money is by playing the game. What’s even worse is those that are searching for such Runescape money cheats and hacks for Runescape are often only directed to malicious sites own by Runescape hackers whose sole objective is to exploit your desire to gain easy Runescape money and turn it against you by installing malicious spyware on your computer to hack your Runescape account and take what little money you have.

Free Runescape Money Cheats, Exploits and Hacks
Now there is always lots of talk about their being exploits in Runescape that people can use to hack into Runescape to make adjustments, and in the past yes there have been minor ones, but these Runescape exploits are extremely temporary and definitely not permanent features of Runescape with the Jagex staff constantly patching such glitches. Not to mention such hacking attempts have never been as exploitable to the point that people were able to change the amount of money they had or give themselves unlimited amounts of money, rather were more along the lines of being able to duplicate expensive items that they could then sell, like party hats. Now if you’d like to take advantage of the exploits in Runescape the reality is unless you’re the person to actually find the exploit yourself chances are you have missed the boat because as Jagex gets wind of them they are already fixing them, and if anyone on a website or forum is explaining to you that they know a free Runescape money hack and all they need you to do is email them your account name and password, rest assured they are just a runescape hacker trying to make you their next sucker with the old “I know a free Runescape money hack that can give you unlimited money” routine.

Runescape Cheats & Hacks for Runescape 2
Another big thing is people installing macros or auto that they use to do various tasks on Runescape that earns them money. It’s cheating but not really a runescape cheat that hacks the game, rather just plays it for you. Now it may have been true back in the Runescape Classic days that getting away with cheating, when it came to Runescape macros and autos, was reasonably possible, but with the coming of what is called Runescape 2 these means of cheats have quickly become obsolete with Jagex introducing many means of detection of the use of such programs in conjunction with Runescape 2.

Free Runescape Money Making Guides and Tips
So whilst there may be no free Runescape money cheats or easy and reliable ways of making Runescape money outside of Runescape itself, there certainly are a lot of ways you can make good Runescape money without resorting to Runescape cheats and hacks. It’s called playing the game and playing it well. Unfortuantely like in life there is no such things as easy Runescape money. Again like life you have to either work hard or work smart for it, but in all honesty there are loads of great quality websites out there with Runescape money making tips and 'how to' guides that will have you on your way to making well over 100-200k an hour with a bit of persistence. So what are you going to have to pay for all this great information; nothing; it’s absolutely free and won’t cost you a cent and you don’t need to download some malicious program to make the money. So the moral of the story, find good information resources like Runescape Boards and don’t look for the supposed quick and easy Runescape money cheat or hack, because there is no such thing as easy runescape money or runescape money hacks.
It would appear that when people search for terms related to Runescape 2 all they really want to know about is how to make easy Runescape 2 Money or Gold through means of Runescape 2 cheats, hacks, autobots, item duplicators, stat changers or other sinister means of making money. How do I know this? Well I recently did some research on what Runescape players where searching for when they searched with the term Runescape 2. These were the results of the top 10 most searched for items including the term Runescape 2:

Runescape 2
Runescape 2 cheats
Runescape 2 hacks
Runescape 2 stat changer
Runescape 2 autominers
Runescape 2 item duplicators
Runescape 2 autoer for download
Runescape 2 money
Runescape 2 autobots
Runescape 2 stat editor

Why search for Runescape 2 Cheats, Hacks, Autominers & Item Duplicators?
It never ceases to amaze me just how many people out there are trying to cheat their way through Runescape and find a quick way of making a few extra gold pieces instead of playing the game like the rest of us do – just as a challenge and for fun. I don’t understand it? I mean I think it is a sad state of affairs when hundreds of people are searching for runescape 2 hacks and cheats instead of searching for things like runescape 2 help or forums where they can go to site like the forum I run, Runescape Boards, and get good quality help that will not only be loads more reliable but also won’t get your banned and all things considered will probably earn you a lot more Runescape gold along the way.

Make Runescape Gold the Right Way
The main reason I’m writing this guide is for all those out there attempting to find great free Runescape 2 cheats, which unfortunately don’t exist - like the runescape 2 stat changer (there has never been a Runescape 2 hack like this, if people are claiming they can change stats it is just a scam). So I'm here to say that there is a much better and smarter way to play Runescape, and it involves playing the game for fun with dedication. If you combine these with a bit of intelligence on time management you will have a wonderful character and loads of Runescape Gold and items in your account in no time. Take this advice from someone who has been playing and involved with the game for over 5 years. Just remember that all these short term methods of making gold also only last in the short term because sooner or later your character will get banned and all your gold will be lost. If you play smart and often you will make all the Runescape Gold you can dream of and you will have made it the right way and it will be yours to keep. Good luck.
One of the things that differentiates Runescape from most other MMO games is the sheer fact that it was built off its success as a free online game first, and still to this very day offers players a free Runescape account option, where there is no initial or ongoing payment involved with playing. These free Runescape accounts is where Jagex built this loyal following to their game and many believe it will sustain its foothold on the MMORPG market. Runescape were the first to introduce the two style play of both free account and paying account version of their game where a large proportion of the game is able to be played with a free account yet if players are willing, they are able to pay a small monthly fee of $5 to receive all the benefits of being a member.

Free Runescape Accounts versus Paying Members
So what are the perks of being a member rather than just having a free Runescape account? Well the biggest difference is the sheer amount of things to do as a member. There are more skills, loads more quest more ways to earn Runescape gold and many more lucrative item and gold drops from many of the creatures that are found in the member’s version of Runescape.

Offering Free Runescape Accounts for How Long?
Is the creation of the pay to play Runescape account option a sign of the inevitable future of Runescape going completely commercial? Whilst most MMO are based on some form of pay to play model Runescape seems to have successful marketed their subscription version such that it can both cater for both free account users and member accounts whilst still offer a relatively continual flow of updates and developments for paying customers. In addition to this Jagex has used this model of two style of play successful for three years now without ever hinting of a complete removal of the free version of the game and as such it would be expected that they will continue to offer free Runescape accounts for the foreseeable future.

How to get your Free Runescape Account
So if you are looking for you free Runescape account all you have to do is signup and register your account over at www.runescape.com the signup process only takes a few moments, and after completing Runescape’s tutorial island you will be well on your way to understand the complex game of Runescape.

Buying Unwanted Runescape Accounts - Accounts for Sale
In the last year or two there has been increasing demand for Runescape accounts and Runescape gold, and with anything in life, if there is demand and it can be supplied at a profit people will more than likely be willing to oblige by selling their product or service. In this case of Runescape accounts there seems to always be Runescape accounts for sale on eBay along with Runescape gold and items, but be warned not only are the majority of such auctions fraudulent attempts to scam buyers of their money they are also against Runescape usage policy which stipulates that there is to be no real world trading for Runescape accounts or in-game gold or items. So even if you were able to purchase an account Jagex itself would most likely be ban that account if it managed to work out that it was purchased illegitimately. So whilst many of the offers may seem tempting you are much better off just to create your own free Runescape account and play the game for fun and enjoyment whilst developing your character along the way

How is this a World of Warcraft clone?

I am writing this to understand something. I have played Lord of the Rings Online since the day after it came out and here's what I don't understand.

How is this a World of Warcraft clone?

Before you people who say this is a clone answer me, let me state a few things.
There are a few "similarities" that I have noticed. But the ones I've noticed are few and far between.

The first thing that is evident is the interface. Okay. The interfaces are similar when you first start out. But I can hardly say that justifies it being a WoW clone at all. And for the people who look at that alone and determine it to be a clone, have you tried pressing CTRL and \ at the same time? Give it a try and you'll see that if that's what bothers you it can be fixed pretty darn quickly.

Another thing I noticed is that you have to go see a trainer to acquire/use some of your skills. Yeah, and that has been the case in just about every MMO that I have played. Not all, but dang near 90% of them. So, I'm kind of confused about this whole thing here too.

Seriously, outside of those two things, what is it that people are saying makes it a WoW clone? I mean, when people were saying it was a WoW clone I was expecting it to be just like WoW. I mean, a "clone" is an exact duplicate. And I know that even if people were using the word loosely you would still expect a good deal of the games to be just alike.

Now, that being said, there have been many things in the game that I have found completely different than WoW.

First, is the way you build your character. There are skills you acquire from doing things in the world. Like if I keep killing the demon dogs in the Barrows, I get a special skill for smashing their killer canine skulls. This is a skill that I can then develop by taking on more of the beasts. I don't see this in WoW.

Second, the way you progress your character development. You take those skills you learned from being out in the world and fighting things (note that the things you fight are completely voluntary, you don't want to build up the skill you get from smashing demon dogs, you can move onto another beastie) and you apply those skills to your character any old way you like by visiting a Bard and placing them on your character sheet. The possibilities are endless here depending on two things. One, what creatures you decided to keep fighting to develop your skill higher, and two which skills from that developed skill set you put into your characters skill tree.

Another thing that is different is the graphics. This one I REALLY do not understand. I read some peoples posts saying that the graphics are the same. No Way!!!! They are completely different. WoW looks like a cartoon. LotRO does not look like a cartoon. It has a different feel to it. I don't know how to describe it, but cartoon does not come to mind. It fits Middle Earth well and does it sincere justice. Having a game look like a cartoon would not do Middle Earth well, in my opinion. I watched the LotR cartoons and never liked them. However, this I do like.

Another difference is the story line in LotRO. It is good. It is enthralling. And it is a very important central part of the game. It's not something half ass thrown together, it is something that you are a part of throughout your journeys. You go on quests with NPC's who lead the way. They talk to you and you talk back to them. You follow them and they lead you through the story. And it all ties together to give you a feeling of being in the middle of an epic tale. This is not in WoW. As a matter of fact, I always felt that Wold of Warcraft would have been more aptly named, "World of leftouttheWar-in-Warcraft". In LotRO there is a battle going on and you live it in the story line.

Another big difference I noticed is the focus turned away from just acquiring goodies. WoW was a raiding game. You went for that big ol loot. That was pretty much the goal of the game. I have not seen one person talking about their "phat loot" while playing LotRO. Why? Because that's not the main focus of the game. That alone changes the whole game to me. You're not there just to slash away and do raiding so that you can look cooler than someone else or kick their butt. This is a story driven game. An interesting story at that. So, I don't miss the PvP. I don't need it to keep me interested in this game.

I could go on and on about the differences, but I think you guys get my point. And I'm going to leave the rest open for whoever wants to post some more. I don't want to make my initial post too long or hog the topic.

I just really think that a lot of people played the beta for a short time, saw the interface, got to level 10 maybe (which is so just the very beginning of the game) and made a quick assumption. They haven't seen the rest of the game nor experienced the neat little things that you get to see later on.

Just me out to do some Mythbusting I guess.

Have fun!

LOTR Online Unseats WoW

LOTR Online Unseats WoW

Daemon Hatfield
The Tolkien MMO is a best-seller right out of the box.
May 10th, 2007 - The Lord of the Rings Online is enjoying a strong start right out of the gate. Publisher Midway and developer Turbine have announced the game was the best-selling PC title in North America the week of April 22-28, the week of its release. The data comes from the most recent sales info from market-research firm the NPD group.

LOTR Online beat out long-running champ World of Warcraft and fellow newcomer Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars to seize the top spot.

"This outstanding start sets the stage for a bright future," said Jeffrey Anderson, president and CEO of Turbine. "This is only the beginning as we embark on an incredible journey with our players to expand the world of Middle-earth with the release of regular content updates."

"Following the most successful North American pre-order program in Midway's history, The Lord of the Rings Online is off to a great start," added Steve Allison, chief marketing officer, Midway.

In addition to North America, Midway says The Lord of the Rings Online was also the best-selling PC game in Europe during the same period, based on data from the UK's Chart-Track, France's GfK, and Germany's Media Control.

The Lord of the Rings Online Post-Launch AU Interview

The Lord of the Rings Online Post-Launch AU Interview

"We can't wait to do Moria, which you can see as the ultimate fantasy dungeon of all time."

Australia, May 16, 2007 - The Lord of the Rings Online is off to a roaring start, garnering very positive reviews and a rapidly expanding player base. No wonder really, as Middle-earth is the archetypal fantasy world, and to be able to explore its plains, valleys and mountains, and to interact with its inhabitants, whether they're a named character or a homely hobbit, is many a gamer's dream come true. Best of all, however, developer Turbine has really nailed it - the visuals, the feel and the mechanics. Looks like WoW finally has some competition. To find out about how smoothly the good ship LOTRO is sailing, as well as what the team has planned for the future, we spoke with the Executive Producer on the game - and industry veteran, Jeffrey Steefel.

IGN: Now that the game is out, how has the response been and is the team happy with the way the game turned out?

Jeffrey Steefel: It's been great, I mean, so far. Y'know, it's early to tell, because we've had four and half years working on it and then we stop to see what's really going on, but it's been great so far. We've gotten the kind of response to the game that we wanted, we've gotten the kind of audience into the game that we were hoping for. The numbers look good so far - again, it's early to tell, but so far very very positive, and for the most part I think we're seeing people play our game the way that we had hoped they would. And of course we're learning some new things which we're already working on trying to make better for after launch.

IGN: Can you tell us roughly how many players you have online at the moment?

Jeffrey Steefel: Well, we actually don't release our numbers right now, but we have lots and lots of people playing worldwide - in North America, Europe, Australia, really all over the world. And soon to be joined by Asia. So we don't disclose numbers at this time, but we've got a large group of people playing.

IGN: Can you talk about how many players each server can host concurrently? Some users are complaining about lag on the servers since the game went retail - have you seen any load issues on your end?

Jeffrey Steefel: We haven't, and there's always all kinds of different reasons for lag, and one of the things we've learnt is that what players call lag can mean any of a hundred different things, and of course we're trying to find out from our players what they're seeing and why they're seeing it, and there's all different sorts of causes. We haven't come close to our load capacity, and we know this because during alpha and beta we did lots of stress testing to push the servers well beyond their capacity, and we are well below that right now and the game is functioning the way we expect it to. What some people see as lag may be client hitchiness that happens because they're running at a graphics setting which is maybe too high for the equipment that they have. There's been some issues with Vista too, and you know, it can just depend on so many different things.

IGN: Speaking of the load bearing tests you did, where do the servers max out? Can you tell us?

Jeffrey Steefel: (laughs) Well again, we don't disclose numbers, but we can hold many thousands of people on our servers, and it's competitive with what other companies are doing in this area. What we set out to do was to say - we want our world size to be equivalent to what the industry standard is right now, but we want to be able to operate our game, which is a much higher fidelity, at those levels of load, and it seems to be doing that right now.

IGN: Geographically, how big is the world in LOTRO that's currently available, say, in comparison to World of Warcraft's?

Jeffrey Steefel: The world that we have is about 50 million square metres, and it's difficult pound for pound to compare the two games. We think that in terms of the amount of gameplay that's generated, and the amount of density in content in the things you're doing and the land that you can traverse and the time it's actually going to take to play through all the content, it's very equivalent to World of Warcraft at launch, perhaps even a little bit more. And so far, we haven't really had anyone get all the way through the game yet, but so far, as we look at the rates of advancement and content consumption and how much time people are spending in the game, it's turning out approximately the way we expected, which is hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of hours of gameplay, just with the launch product.

IGN: In terms of content, you've announced the first free expansion, which is hitting towards the end of this month, any chance you can give us some details that haven't been released yet?

Jeffrey Steefel: I'm not sure what's been released in your part of the world, but it's the Shores of Evendim and it's a whole new region. One of the things that Turbine has always done, starting in Asheron's Call and something that we're going to push very hard on in Lord of the Rings is frequent and real meaningful updates, so our first update to the game is going to be an entire new region, so where we shipped with eight regions, we're now shipping a ninth region which is itself almost ten million square metres or something like that. We're adding, ostensibly, another 15-20% of area to the game just in this one update. We're also adding well over a hundred new quests, we're adding nine or ten new monsters, we're adding new functionality, we've taken our music system to the next level so there's all kinds of new things you're going to be able to do, including sustain notes and import music to play on your character instrument. And we've made, obviously, lots of changes and adjustments in a positive way, to the game based on what players have been telling us and what we've observed, y'know, things that we've learned since we've had a really large audience in the game.

IGN: You're rolling out another massive area of Tolkien's world. How many more areas can you do, and how long is it going to take to roll out all the planned environments? To complete Middle-earth?

Jeffrey Steefel: Years and years and years. If you take a look at the map of Middle-earth, the regions that we've been covering in Eriador, which is basically the north-western corner of Middle-earth. Just looking at the map it's a small small portion of a very large world, and we have just focused on Eriador for now, and there are areas within Eriador that we've not even touched on. So Evendim for example, fills in the area between The Shire and Ered Luin which we had left non-contiguous during the launch product, now that sort of ties those two areas together. So one thing we're not worried about is running out of content and running out of land. Y'know, a decade from now when we run out of all of Middle-earth there's even more content to explore because Tolkien spent a lot of time talking about - in fairly vague ways - what lies to the east and what lies to the south and about some parts of the fourth age. There's so much to explore.

IGN: Are there any events from the books that you're particularly looking forward to implementing? And is there anything that you simply can't include in the game?

Jeffrey Steefel: There's nothing that we can't include in the game. As far as what we looking forward to, I mean, boy, if you talk to my designers we've got so many things ahead of us that we can't wait to do. We can't wait to do Moria, which you can see as the ultimate fantasy dungeon of all time. It's a whole city, it's an entire region in the Misty Mountains. We'll eventually get down into Rohan, and we'll have a whole group of humans who are horsemen, and you'll have all the other things we're going to get into - Mirkwood, Gladden Fields and Fangorn. It really just goes on and on. There are so many places we can't wait to get to.

IGN: What's the next really big feature change or update for the game, aside from the new content at the end of this month?

Jeffrey Steefel: We're working on some stuff now that we're going to be releasing later in the year. We're not talking about it yet but it's going to be a substantial addition to the functionality of the game that we think people are going to love, and that people constantly ask for and have been interested in. There's a whole series of features that we want to add to the game. Not because necessarily we quote unquote 'couldn't get them done before launch' but because the game is going to be begin to evolve over time, the audience and the community is going to evolve, and the things that those audiences need are going to also evolve. So, where in the very beginning you want very solid, very very compelling gameplay - which of course you always want, but that's the real focus. How do I get into this game, how do I start my character, what is my gameplay going to be like, how's my advancement path, or paths in this case? So there's lots of areas now that we can begin to grow, for all the different types of audiences that we're going to find in the game. So we're going to have a hardcore audience that's going to be looking for more and more elder content, be looking for more and more challenging things to do in the monster play areas. Then you're going to have a more - casual's not really the right word, but a slightly less hardcore group that's going to be spending more time in the social areas and in social activities, and we're working on a lot of things to support that as well.

IGN: Have any class imbalances reared their heads yet? Anything that's really standing out this early in the game which will require some class tuning?

Jeffrey Steefel: Not really in terms of class. I mean, for our first launch pass we're pretty happy with what we launched with. We are going to be - and this is something that's going to start with Evendim, every update we're going to start devoting some focus to one of the classes. So for example, 'the month of the champion' will be part of the Evendim launch, and we'll do other classes as we move forward. Not really to fix things that are broken, but to just make them even better, to give them more depth and more interesting things to do, in a way that doesn't unbalance the classes. We feel that they're fairly well balanced right now. Don't forget also that we also have the whole trait system, which is really a whole other way for us to tune the classes, by introducing new traits we give capabilities to not just one but sometimes multiple classes, so that's something that's going to be happening continuously to flesh out each of the classes and each of the different character build paths that are available to you.

IGN: It's a constant process. I guess that's the thing with MMO development is that even when you've released the game you've still got years and years of work and tuning ahead of you.

Jeffrey Steefel: You have to love it. If you don't love that then it's probably the wrong kind of game to be building.

IGN: Can Oceania players look forward to an official server? Currently we're making do with Elendilmir.

Jeffrey Steefel: It's something that we're talking about, we're never ruling out, I think in some respects it's going to be up to our partners Codemasters and the people that are doing distribution in that part of the world. I think it really is going to come down to what the needs are of the people there, how many people are playing, are there any issues that can be specifically resolved by having servers located more centrally, so we don't have any plans to do that right now, but it's not something we've ruled out, and it's certainly something that comes up in conversation. Not casual conversation. (laughs).
